When you request a document through CPDP. We will submit a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request, and send it to the Chicago Police Department or the Civilian Office of Police Accountability.

After we submit a request, the police department is expected to respond within two weeks. If they respond favorably, they begin redacting the information from the file, and then submit the file to the City attorney and to the police union. If everyone agrees, they release that file to us, and then we post it publicly.

This process, as you might imagine, is very slow. There are many complications, and it is usually even slower than the above describe process. Be assured, we have noted your request, and will be sending out a FOIA soon.

Before being released, each CR file must have all personal information for non-police officers redacted.
